NEW FUTURES, FULL LIVES
Holistic support is in reach for families and children in Guatemala City’s poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods.
El Carmen Center is named for the neighborhood it serves, a red zone filled with gang activity, both there and in the larger area surrounding it – Santa Catarina Pinula.
Most families in this neighborhood don’t have formal jobs but work as day-laborers, earning $7 per day, which they often stretch to feed four people or more.
One of the biggest challenges in this neighborhood is the extortion of marginalized families.
Through a partnership with Lemonade International, Asociación Comunitaria Alcance expanded enrollment at the El Carmen Center, and now serves 170 children. Families have the opportunity to receive daily, nutritious, hot meals rich in protein, carbohydrates and vegetables. Students receive spiritual, academic, and emotional support. And parents are regularly encouraged, instructed, and empowered through monthly Parenting Classes. Many teachers receive only a small stipend for their work, but they continue to volunteer as part-time or full-time team members because of their love for the community!
