World Humanitarian Day

From the UN website: “… World Humanitarian Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe.”

We join with people all over the world today to celebrate the love that we believe comes from God – a love that moves people to serve others in need and join with them in solidarity. We thank God for those who serve together with the people of La Limonada in Guatemala City. We’re grateful that they shine with love and joy and hope in the face of injustice, violence, abuse and neglect. And we thank the people of La Limonada who have taught so many of us about God’s love and about what it means to be human.

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them…
…if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.”
– Isaiah 58:6-10

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” – James 2:14-17
