The Rich Kind Of Poor

Jesus’ care for the oppressed, the poor, and the marginalized is a huge part of what the Gospel is all about. His was not simply a message that was preached, but it was a life that was lived. And for us his life is a life that is to be followed.

Through Jesus’ life and through his words, he calls us to repent and turn from sin and to a life lived in communion with God. But there is more. Story after story from the Gospels reveals Jesus healing the sick, feeding the poor, embracing those who were rejected, forgiving those who sinned.

He lived a life of action.

He didn’t just preach a belief system that we need to adhere to. He lived a life of love in action. He calls us to love in action as well – to love and care for those who have been marginalized, to go to the ends of the earth with the message of God’s grace, to give to those who are in need.

Mars Hill Bible Church is a community that has inspired me to live out the message of the Gospel and to lead Lemonade International in such a way that the Gospel is proclaimed. The following message is timely – as this time of year is focused on so much on giving. It is based in 2 Corinthians 8:1-4 – where the apostle Paul commends a group of people who were materially poor for their rich generosity.

This passage is a great example of the Gospel being lived out by followers of Jesus – of love in action.
