Sofia Balán 1.5.05 – 10.30.09

One of our new students at Escuela Mandarina left this earth on Friday morning, and went home to be with our amazing Creator. Sofia Balán died Friday morning after an apparent infection in her tonsils spread to her brain.

She left the school Thursday after not feeling well, and was walked home by her teacher. Her mother took her to the IGSS hospital that afternoon, and they sent her home saying she was fine. She collapsed Friday morning and by the time they got her to the hospital, she had already passed away.

She lived with her mother and grandmother who cared for her. Her dad left home to live with another woman some time ago but is now back at home in light of the death of his daughter, trying to work on his marriage. Sofia has a 16 year old brother who has severe mental disabilities and is in the hospital under long-term care.

We are asking you to join with us in praying for Sofia’s family – for their loss, for the restoration of a marriage, for the strength to see God’s goodness, and for the will to carry on.

I know the loss here is great, but I also find joy as I imagine where Sofia is now and for eternity.
