Yesterday morning more than 80 children from the schools in La Limonada and the Mi Casita Safe Home embarked on a five hour bus trip to the El Faro retreat center near Puerto Barrios on the coast of Guatemala on the Carribean Sea. As in years past, for most of the children it is their first time at the beach and for some their first time outside the city.
Teachers from the schools, local artists and a group led by our friends from Athentikos will be leading workshops with the children throughout the week teaching them about God’s love through the arts. Art forms such as photography, painting, dance and music will provide a joyful experience for children who are so often surrounded by gang violence, drug addiction, abuse and hopelessness.
Along with a $4,000 grant received by Athentikos from the LEGO corporation to help cover the cost of Art Camp, the children will also be making LEGO creations from the dozens of boxes of LEGOs also donated by the company.
The week will wrap up on Saturday as the children return to La Limonada for a special presentation for their families. We’re looking forward to sharing photos and stories from Art Camp as soon as we’re able to.
Thanks to so many who made this week a reality for the special children we are called to serve.
