In November of last year we expanded our work by establishing a second school – “Escuelita Mandarina” – in another barrio in La Limonada. With a $15,000 donation we received we were able to purchase the building for approximately $9,000, as well as purchase new desks and chairs for the classrooms and all the needed items for the kitchen.
In January we were here with a team from Lifepointe Church from our home base in Raleigh, NC and we were able to see the building for the first time. The building was already being used to feed, educate, mentor and love a new group of about 80 children, but it needed significant renovations and repairs. Estimates for the work came in at about $28,000.
With another generous donation of $10,000, and because of partnerships with Amistad Foundation and Life Of Hope, work quickly began to renovate the building. When all is completed there will be room for about 300 children and a new carpentry workshop to teach the young men a trade that will give them options for their lives outside of the gangs. There are also plans to utilize the building for a church community as well.
For less than $5,000 the next phase of this work can be completed. It is important that a roof is on the building before rainy season… which begins at the end of this month. Would you consider helping us with this important project?
If you would like to make a donation to help complete this work please go to our Donation Page and choose the fund, “Vidas Plenas – The Schools”.
