A Time to Prepare

As part of preparation for the school year, this past week the teachers had a three-day training session with Nate and Myra Bacon. The Bacons have been working with InnerChange for several years and have an extensive backround in gang ministry, hospitality, and Biblical teaching.

The whole team got together each morning of last week to get to know each other better before the training sessions. Each morning began with prayer, a little bit of singing (and dancing!), with a lot of laughter.

We discussed if there is a difference between a disciple and a missionary, referencing Luke 4, in which Jesus calls his disciples to be fishers of men. The teachers at the schools are all disciples with one common mission – to educate and represent Christ’s light to the children in La Limonada. Just being in the room was a powerful experience. I felt honored to be surrounded by so many amazing people.

The spiritual training was accompanied by various behavioral studies and exercises. We took a look at different personality styles and how we interact with each other. This exercise quickly led us to 1 Corinthians 12:24b-27.

But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

An important lesson that Nate and Myra shared was to be appreciative of the natural-born leaders while encouraging them to help raise new leaders. They used practical examples and stories to put this effort into place. In just the three days we spent together, change and growth became obvious in team building activities where most felt more comfortable opening up or helping lead than before.

The team in Guatemala extends many, many thanks out to Nate and Myra for their time and energy in sharing their knowledge and talent.
