75 Children Awaiting “Padrinas” (Sponsors)

It has been a little over a year since we officially launched our child sponsorship program, and it has been a very exciting year!

Our first child was sponsored on July 8, 2008 and it amazes us to realize that 261 children have been sponsored since then. This vital program has provided so much for the children in La Limonada and for those who have sponsored children. As we have been saying, it has changed the lives of people in Guatemala and here in the US.

We started our child sponsorship for a number of reasons, most important of which is the meaningful relationships that are formed. Our team had established personal relationships with these children over the years and we saw the impact that those relationships have had on the lives of the kids…. and our desire has been to extend those relationships to others.

By extending this opportunity, individuals and families have been able to establish and build personal relationships and connections with a specific child (or children) that is being reached through our schools in La Limonada. The children consider this a very special relationship and refer to their sponsors as “Padrinas” (which translates to “Godparents” in English). These relationships have, in turn, created the possibility for people here to regularly pray for and communicate with the children there. As you may know, there are many heartbreaking stories of the conditions of the lives of the children and their families in La Limonada, and there is definitely a need to have people praying for them and encouraging them.

Your generosity through your monthly donations has dramatically expanded the reach of our work in this community. From contributions we have received through child sponsorship and other general donations, about 50 more students are attending the schools, more teachers have been hired, more food is being purchased for the additional children who are now attending, we have purchased a second school building, renovated it and are about to add at least 60 new students as part of phase one of our expansion in the new building (“Escuelita Mandarina”).

There remain about 75 children who have yet to be sponsored, and they are always asking the staff in Guatemala, “What do I need to do to have a Padrina?”. The lives of the children are impacted by their sponsors in ways that are difficult to put into words. Their faces light up everytime they receive a letter… and even more so when their sponsor visits in person.

Please consider sponsoring a child today. We ask for a minimum donation of $35 a month. These funds go to provide education, mentoring, food, clothing, vitamins, medicines, and more to the children at the schools. If $35 is not something you can do at this time, please consider joining our TEN2END Campaign.
